AUTUMN Term 2024
Welcome to Y6! Our new pupils have made a great start to the new academic year, settling into their new learning environments responsibly. We are very much looking forward to the year ahead. We have already been discussing with them the many jobs Y6 help with around the school and started allocating roles.
This term our DPC topic is 900 CE - focusing on a study of the Mayan civilisation. We will cover the history of the Maya, using information about the buildings and artefacts they left behind to examine how they lived their daily lives. In Art, we will create Mayan masks, utilising different media.
Our science topics this term are Classification and Light; we will be carrying out different practical activities and investigations during these units. We also have a provisional booking for Coventry Cathedral this term (more details to follow), both to enhance our RE learning and also to learn more about how the cathedral was affected by World War 2.
In English, we will be studying Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo, a classic novel set in World War 2. This book will inspire various pieces of writing such as diary entries, letters and narrative pieces. Each of the four English groups will also be studying a 'shared reader' and using this to secure essential reading skills. In maths, we are focusing on place value, all four operations and fractions this term.
PE will be taught on Tuesdays. We teach the ‘real PE’ programme with the aim to equip children with key essential abilities to maximise potential and long-term participation. During the course of the week, your child will be taught by all the Y6 teachers, as we specialise in certain subjects to enhance our provision; this also helps to prepare them for KS3. We look forward to meeting you all during the term at our parents' information evening and parents' evening.
