autumn TERM 2025
Year 1
We are excited to be back and have had a fantastic start to the academic year. We are thoroughly enjoying using group work and continuous provision to support the transition from EYFS to Key Stage 1, particularly making the most of our outdoor area.
Our daily English, phonics and maths sessions will be practical, engaging and, wherever possible, linked to our other curriculum areas. All lessons, across the curriculum, will continue to develop our speaking and listening skills and provide a range of writing opportunities. In reading, we are focusing on applying our phonics knowledge to decode new words, developing our discussion of different texts and fostering the love of reading. We will be encouraging all children to read as often as possible, and to share their thoughts and opinions with us and their classmates. In science, we will be learning about different materials and how we can group and classify them. This will involve investigating the various properties of a range of materials and their uses. In geography we will be doing a unit of work called ‘What is it like here?’ This unit focuses on the different features we see in villages, towns and cities and looks at basic plans and maps. We will explore our school grounds and practise using compass directions.
Later in the term, we will be moving on to a history unit called ‘How am I making history?’ which focuses on our personal chronology and finding out about events within living memory. We will be exploring events such as Remembrance as well looking at our school’s own history.
1D will soon be starting ‘Yoga Bugs’ during their PE sessions on a Friday. The other Year 1 classes will also take part in these special PE lessons during the spring and summer terms.
We are all looking forward to an exciting term ahead!
