SUMMER 2025
Year 1
Year One have an exciting term ahead! We will be beginning our new geography topic called 'What is it like to live in Shanghai?', where the children will be building on their understanding of the different continents, identifying countries on a map and comparing the human and physical features of Dorridge and Shanghai.
We will also be looking at a new history unit called ‘How have toys changed?’, where the children will find out all about toys from the past. In this topic, we will be learning all about the world of toys and the role that they play in entertaining us, educating us, and stimulating our imagination. We will be finding out about the ways in which toys have changed over time and the sorts of toys that our parents and grandparents played with when they were young. In Design Technology, we will be learning about the different stages of the toy-making process and creating our own puppet. As part of this unit, we will visit the Black Country Living Museum on Thursday 4th June to see some old fashioned toys in a hands-on workshop experience.
In Art, we will be looking at ‘woven wonders’. This unit will help the children with developing their use of creative techniques like wool wrapping and weaving, and understand the work of artists like Cecilia Vicuña. The children will be building up their skills to create this own small scale woven creations.
Our science work will continue to build on our understanding of plants and the children will be growing and monitoring their own plant which they will be taking care of. We will then move onto a new topic of 'Weather' which will provide exciting opportunities for the children to make their own weather stations to monitor the weather in Dorridge. In addition to this, children will be learning about the seasons, how this can affect weather and how the day length varies depending on the time of year it is.
We have lots of exciting, practical activities planned and are hoping for lots of good weather so we can enjoy our outdoor area.
