What is School Direct?

School Direct courses generally last a year and result in qualified teacher status (QTS) – most also award you a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) and/or Master’s-level credits.

This route offers an extended Professional Practice placement in one main school (called a Base School), supplemented by an additional placement (for a minimum of five weeks) in a contrasting school. This ensures a varied and balanced experience of teaching in different settings, whilst allowing you to contribute significantly to the life of your Base School. The taught programme is approximately 35 days; you will spend the remainder of your time in school.

You will be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive support from experienced teachers and mentors. That means you won’t be teaching classes unsupported until the school thinks you are ready. The principles of academic rigour on School Direct are the same as on university-led courses. You are also equally eligible for a training bursary or scholarship and can apply for the same financial support, such as student loans.

We are offering School Direct Train to Teach courses designed by a network of like-minded schools in partnership with Warwick University. Our alliance of schools recruits you as a trainee with a job in mind just for you. This is a popular route into teaching for those who hope to secure a role in the network of schools where they train.
