Art

‘Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else.’ - Sydney Gurewitz Clemens.

Curriculum Intent

Creativity is a central element to the delivery of the curriculum as a whole; there are no boundaries between subjects. Our aim is to provide every child with an engaging, inspirational and challenging curriculum that equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Through Art, children learn to appreciate and understand the importance of culture and diversity by studying a range of artists and gaining an understanding of how some of these artists have shaped our history.  A variety of skills including drawing, painting, and sculpture amongst others are taught in what forms an integral and often cross-curricular part of our work. The creativity of our school and its pupils can be seen on display throughout the school.

Curriculum Implementation

EYFS - Nursery and Reception

Expressive arts and design is one of the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage and is used to develop a child's imagination, creativity and their ability to use media and materials. Children do this in range of ways including singing songs and making music, dancing, playing with colours, textures and design. We nurture their individuality and creativity and encourage them to have the confidence to explore and be original. They gain great pride in seeing their work proudly displayed around their classrooms and school.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 art projects often link with the DPC topics we cover.

Skills Progression in Art

Creative Arts Week

Every year in the Autumn Term we hold a Creative Arts week where all children have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Arts and get creative. Over the course of the week, we welcome a variety of external artists and companies into school to work with the children, as well as visits to local galleries and museums.

Dorridge Primary Art Gallery 'The DPAG'

We are very proud to show our pupils art skills linked to the International Primary Curriculum, Creative Arts Weeks and curriculum enrichment opportunities.

The Big Sleuth

In 2017, Dorridge Primary School took part in ‘The Big Sleuth,’ a sensational art trail held across Birmingham. Over the summer, our very own bear, ‘Paws for Thought’ was proudly displayed in Solihull Library. He is now in his forever home in the Key Stage 1 foyer for everyone to see. We also have a bright collection of Bear cubs designed by our own pupils. See some of our wonderful bears in our Galleries.
